Most of your time in Edda is spent in the scene editor, so this release puts its effort there. Here is what changed.
A real word processor
The scene editor now has the toolbar you would expect from any word processor:
- Font family and size, text colour and highlight, superscript and subscript.
- Alignment, line spacing, paragraph spacing and indents.
- Bulleted and numbered lists, and checklists.
- A style menu.
- An Insert menu for links, scene breaks, page breaks, footnotes, endnotes, citations and special characters, and a Page menu for how the page looks.
On a phone the toolbar would crowd out your writing, so all of it sits behind one Aa button.
A page with margins
Your writing now sits on a page with proper margins and a comfortable line length, instead of running edge to edge across a wide screen. Choose the page width, the margins and the zoom to suit your eyes and your monitor.
Formatting that travels
The formatting you set carries through to Word, EPUB and HTML exports. It also comes in with you: paste from Word or Google Docs and the formatting stays.
One word count
Edda now counts words the same way everywhere: in the editor, in chapter and manuscript totals, in your goals and in exports. If the editor says 2,140, so does everything else.
The manuscript on phones and tablets
The phone and tablet manuscript now has everything the desktop one has: scene menus, moving scenes between chapters, split screen, search, and find and replace.
Compile
The font size, line height and indent controls in Compile now work, and your compiled book follows them.
Beta readers
- Share a draft with an invite code, and send new chapters to the same copy when they are ready.
- Comments come back with the passage they are about, so you can see what each note refers to.
- Edda Beta Reader, a free reading app for your readers, is coming soon to Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, Mac and Linux. Your readers will not need to buy Edda to read your draft and leave comments.
More on how Edda works with beta readers is on the beta readers page.
Tidier everywhere
We removed duplicate buttons and settings, and fixed about fifteen small things that did not work.
One shortcut change
Ctrl+R now aligns text right, as it does in other word processors. If you used Ctrl+R to reload, press F5 instead.
Getting 5.4
Edda 5.4 is a free update for Windows, macOS (Apple Silicon), Linux and Android. On Windows, macOS and the Linux AppImage, your installed copy updates itself. If you use the Linux .deb, or Edda on Android, download the new version from the download page and install it over the old one; your projects stay where they are.
Want to try it first? The live demo runs in your browser and saves nothing. For everything else that arrived recently, see the Edda 5.3 release notes.
